Hammer in the Morning
Old Pete died last week
and they said all the usual
nice things like they did for
Nelson a month ago and
will again next month for
whoever it might be gets
called up then.
And the banality of it all
drives me to parse the words
in search for some meaning
'Til I find myself asking––
“What kind of love
gets hammered in the morning?”
About this: The tributes that followed Pete Seeger’s death, a banal ritual now expected on the death of any celebrity, took me to think about the lyrics of some of his better known work, and to question why we find appeal in songs that present ideas that seem bizarre, like his goal of “hammering out love”.
