October 29, 2018: Contemplation of Justice

“Though justice be thy plea, consider this,

That in the course of justice none of us

Should see salvation . . .”

––Wm. Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice 4.1.1

Contemplation of Justice, a marble sculpture by James Earle Fraser, at the west entrance to the US Supreme Court. Fraser described the female figure as “a realistic conception of what I consider a heroic type of person with a head and body expressive of the beauty and intelligence of justice.”

A book of laws supports her left arm and a figure of blindfolded Justice is in her right hand.
