October 26, 2018: Child of the Republic

"Come away, O human child!

To the waters and the wild . . .”

––WB Yeats: The Stolen Child

The US Capitol Statuary Hall collection comprises 100 statues––2 selected by each of the 50 states. Together they present images of 101 notable Americans, North Dakota’s selection having included the only child to be presented: Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, the son of Sakakawea, the Shoshone woman who served as guide and interpreter for the 1805 Lewis and Clark expedition to the Pacific Ocean.
