July 16, 2018: One Small Step, One Giant Leap

“Ah remember the first day of man on the moon

The whole world was watching, a whole world in tune

It was hard to believe he was the same as you and me."

Chris de Burgh: The Spirit of Man

Crescent Moon over Vancouver Island, July 15, 2018.

Apollo 11, Nasa’s mission placing the first men on the moon, launched from the Kennedy Space Centre 49 years ago today.

Travelling by road through Yucatan, we happened into a small ancient Mayan community that evening. A tiny old B/W TV was set up in the village square, showing replays of the launch.

There was something poetic and timeless in that moment, which has kept it alive in my memory for almost half a century.
